Barbara L. Rock

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Moises and Marie (Ventura) Oliveira, she lived the majority of her life in New Bedford.

At the age of 70, Mrs. Rock received a Bachelor of Science degree from U-Mass Dartmouth.

She had worked for many years as a waitress at Thad’s Steakhouse and was able to put her 4 children through college on a waitress income. Because she was bilingual in English and Portuguese, she also worked as a switchboard operator for JC Penney in Dartmouth.

Her family includes four children, Dennis E. Rock and his wife Michele of Carrollton, VA, Roxanne Robinson and her husband Stuart of Mount Airy, MD, Lynda Servies and her husband David of Pace, FL and Paula L. Doherty and her husband Ed of Sandwich, MA; five grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Rebecca, Shane and Brady; one great-granddaughter, Avery; her close friends, Cynthia and Marilyn; and one niece and one nephew. She was predeceased by a grandson, Timothy and a brother, Albert “Sonny” Oliveira.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 10:30AM in Pine Grove Cemetery. Please meet at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford prior at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the ALS Association, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 6051, Albert Lea, MN 56007.
