Barry Matthew Almeida

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, son, and brother, Barry Matthew Almeida who was peacefully called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 16, 2025 at the age of 57.

Barry was a generous loving soul and a devoted father to his two sons, Chad and Jake Almeida, daughter-in-law Helen, granddaughters Stella and Ivy, and grandson Maddox. Barry is survived by his mother, Lorene (Camara) Almeida, his sister Cheryl, and his three brothers, Michael, Scott, and Brian Almeida. He was the son of the late Gilbert J. Almeida, his wife Emily (Mroz) Almeida and caring stepmom Mary Kenna, nephew of Linda Pierce, and former husband to Christina O’Hayre.

Barry’s family was his pride and joy, and he had great love for all his friends and family. Some of his most happiest and cherished moments in life were spent playing “corn on the cob” with his beloved granddaughters who would laugh hysterically giggling as they enjoyed their grandfather’s attention.

For decades, Barry worked as a commercial fisherman and served on many scallopers and draggers mostly out of the New Bedford port. He was a dedicated and well-known fishing captain sought for his navigational and engineering skills and expertise in all things fishing the Grand Banks and beyond. The consummate fishing boat Captain, Barry, on more than one occasion saved the lives’ of his crew mates. He was a real hero to those two men and was loved by his waterfront friends and crew mates.

While Barry lived his life full of love for others and dedicated to his family and friends, he was consecrated to God and was a man of deep faith and prayer. He loved his Catholic faith and his strong beliefs guided him throughout his life.

Barry will be forever be in our hearts. May he rest in eternal peace.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at 10 a.m. in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery, Allen St., New Bedford. For online tribute/directions: www.rock-funeralhome.com.
