Daniel E. Fortier, age 92, of New Bedford passed away on Thursday, May 23rd, 2019. He was the loving husband of Lois C. (Parent) Fortier. They had been married for over 68 years. He was the son of the late Henry and Rose (Bedard) Fortier.
Daniel was born and raised in the north end of New Bedford where he was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Parish. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and was very proud to have served in the Navy during the Second World War as a seaman 1st class. He was employed as a salesman for Nabisco for most of his working career.
Dan loved sports. He was the first baseman for Bouchard’s Tavern in the Bristol Twilight League where he played first base. He also liked to play ping pong and won a city-wide ping pong championship in his youth. In addition, he loved to play tennis, dance, ski and study history. He was a member of the New Bedford American Legion, American French Genealogy Society and loved spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Lois C. Fortier; two sons Lee J. Fortier and his wife Michele A. DeMary of Fairhaven and Daniel R. Fortier and his wife Pamela J. Fortier of Harwich; a daughter Jo-Ann M. Fortier and her husband Leon A. Modeste III of Andover; and a granddaughter Margaux R. Fortier.
He was the youngest of five brothers; the late Henry, Norman, Raymond and Gerard Fortier. Of note, all five brothers served in WWII at the same time; they all survived and returned home to their loving parents.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 9:00AM in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford, MA 02745 followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Mary's Church, 343 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.
