Edgar M. De Mello, 76, of E. Freetown, Massachusetts, passed away at home on September 18, 2026. Born on November 28, 1949, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, he came to the United States at the age of three. He was the beloved son of the late Eugene and Maria Gloria Mello.
Edgar built his life around showing up for others and working hard for what mattered most. For over 40 years, he was the co-owner of De Mello's Market with his two brothers in the south end of New Bedford, a commitment that reflected both his work ethic and the pride he took in serving his community.
Edgar enjoyed sports, was a car enthusiast, and took pleasure in golfing, working with his hands, and building things. His sense of humor brought happiness to those around him.
Above all else, Edgar’s family was his greatest pride and joy. He was a man of tremendous generosity and would do anything for his family. He was married to the late Carol Ann (Schell) De Mello.
He is survived by his daughter, Kerry L. Girard and life partner Scott; his son, Duane E. De Mello and wife Cindy; his brothers, Joseph De Mello and wife Linda, and Nobert De Mello and wife Cheryl; and his grandchildren, Loriann Ralat and husband Carlos, Shelby Franco and husband Alec, Emily King and husband Darren, Alison Girard and significant other William Tivey, Nichole Girard and significant other Ryan St. John, Liam De Mello, and Austin and Lillian Caruso. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. His Funeral will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 9:00 am from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am in St. John Neumann Church, 157 Middleboro Rd., East Freetown.
