On the stormy morning of Sunday, 27 September 2026, Eduardo "Eddie" M. Oliveira, age 73, beloved husband, father, grandfather, doggie grandfather, brother, and friend—graciously embraced the entrance to rejoin the all-loving Creator.
Eddie was the true definition of the "beat-the-odds" type of person. Throughout his life’s trials and tribulations, nothing could nor would deter his will and ambition to achieve something greater than what was deemed possible—forever providing selflessly for those he loved so dearly.
Born in Lagoa, on the island of St. Michael in the Azores, to Antonio de Oliveira Zangão and Maria Rosa da Costa Zangão. Eddie worked diligently to be with his family here in America after remaining behind as an adolescent to serve in the Portuguese military. His arrival in the United States was profoundly sublime, once finally reunited with his loving parents and siblings.
This sublimity became mutual upon meeting the love of his life and wife of 49 years, Maria Francisca ‘Fran’ Oliveira. Together, their union created three wonderful children: Kelly and her husband Bobby, Stacey, and Matthew. His complete devotion, pride and joy shone through the immeasurable amount of love he had for his grandchildren—Alissa, Brian Jr., Mikey Jr., and Dominic; and his three cherished doggie babies—Ricky Bobby, Mary Jane, and Neeko.
Eddie often reminisced about the vacations he took with his wife to Las Vegas, dancing well into the night to musical artists Tom Jones, Celine Dion, and an uncanny Elvis impersonator.
Eddie proved time-and-time again that his immense intellect, practical skills, and tireless work ethic were unmatched. His dedication opened doors to supervisory roles on the New Bedford waterfront, and employment at several industrial manufacturing companies throughout the region.
When faced with an incurable diagnosis and permanent organ failure more than a decade ago, Eddie refused to surrender. He defied the dire prognosis when his organs miraculously regained function, and persisted to surpass expectations.
Nevertheless, Eddie humbly decided it was his time to return home. He arrived to a welcoming pawty thrown by his beloved predeceased doggie babies—Lily Myrtle and Noah; overcoming Sunday's stormy Nor'easter only to be surrounded with their love and a heavenly rainbow filled with [azul] skies.
Eddie was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Maria Olinda Manteiga; his brothers, Antonio M. Oliveira, Durvino C. Zangão, and José F. Zangão; his brother-in-law Martin Botelho; and nephew Corey Sarmento. In addition to his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and doggie babies, he is survived by his brothers, Raul Oliveira (Margarida Oliveira) and John Zangão; his sisters, Rosa Lopes (Manuel Lopes), Zelia Sarmento, Teresa Vieira (Jimmy Sturtevant), and Grace Botelho; sister-in-laws Maria L. Zangão, Fernanda Zangão, and Maria L. Oliveira; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Eddie's wife and children wish to express their sincere gratitude to everyone for their comforting thoughts, prayers, and condolences. Special gratitude is extended to Dr. Othman and the oncology/hospitalist team at Southcoast Health along with Sandra Alua PA; and to Grace and Francisco Rosonina and family for their unwavering support.
Arrangements for Eddie will include cremation, followed by a private service of remembrance to be held at a later date.
