Francisco Borges Pereira, 77, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara (Perpetua) Pereira, to whom he was married on April 21, 1974.
Born in Vila da Praia da Vitória, Terceira, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Francisco Alves Pereira and Teresa (da Silva) Borges. He immigrated to the United States over 50 years ago, where he built a beautiful life surrounded by family, friends, and the community he loved.
Francisco worked as a butcher for more than 30 years at Continental Market, where he was known for his dedication and hard work. Outside of work, he was a wonderful cook who took great pleasure in preparing meals and sharing them with his family and friends. He loved the simple joy of having people gathered around the table, enjoying good food and even better company.
Francisco was a kind, easygoing man who was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved. He was often seen with a smile on his face and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved telling jokes and making others laugh, leaving behind countless memories of laughter and happiness. His close friends and family affectionately called him “Charrua,” a special nickname that reflected his love of singing cantorias and sharing his music and good spirit with those around him.
He was also an avid soccer fan and especially enjoyed watching his favorite team, Sporting. Whether watching a game, sharing a joke, singing a cantoria, cooking for his family, or simply enjoying the company of those he loved, Francisco had a way of making ordinary moments feel special.
He will be deeply missed by his children, Manuel “Manny” Pereira and his wife Melanie of Dartmouth, and Ana Pereira of New Bedford; his three beloved granddaughters, Zoe, Harper, and Penelope; his siblings, Jose Borges Pereira and his wife of Canada, Maria Teresa da Silva Borges Pereira of Terceira, Azores, Antonio Borges Pereira and his wife of Terceira, Azores, and Manuel Borges Pereira and his wife of Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
Francisco leaves behind a lifetime of love, laughter, music, and cherished memories. His warm smile, playful sense of humor, and loving presence will forever remain in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Though he is gone, the laughter he shared, the songs he sang, and the love he gave his family will continue to live on through them.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, with a funeral service to be held at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held Friday from 5–7 p.m.
