Born in San Juan, California, he was the son of the late Manuel and Amelia (Silveira) Madruga.
Mr Madruga graduated from New Bedford Vocational Technical High School and served in the US Army during WWII during the invasion of Italy, where he received a Purple Heart.
He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church where he was a collector for 25 years. He worked at Morse Twist Drill for 45 years before retiring. He was a member of the Acushnet VFW Tuttle Post 7239, The Damien Knights of Columbus Council in Mattapoisett, where he served as Grand Knight, a member of the 4th Degree Assembly, and manager. He was a past commander of the Portuguese American War Veteran's and was a past member of the Portuguese American Civic League.
In Acushnet, where he lived his entire life, he served on the Finance Committee, Personnel board and the Democratic Committee. During his younger years he coached Little League baseball and was a volunteer fireman under Chief Conrad Gauthier.
He is survived by a son James S. Madruga Jr. and his wife Georgia of Acushnet; two grandchildren, Jay M. Madruga and his wife Melissa of Orlando, Florida and Kevin S. Madruga and his companion Aimee Chevalier of Acushnet and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral mass Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 10 AM at St. Francis Xavier Church, 125 Main Street, Acushnet. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers or donations, spend time with your elderly loved ones and cherish those moments.
