James H. Wood

James H. Wood, 82, of East Freetown, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on August 10, 2026, following a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Elaine (Furtado) Wood, with whom he shared 53 devoted years of marriage.

Born in Plymouth, he was the son of the late Ellis and Virginia (Young) Wood. James was a graduate of Middleboro High School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Intrepid during the Vietnam War. He made his home in Freetown for the past 48 years, where he raised his family.

James was employed at Precix, formerly Acushnet Rubber Company, for many years until his retirement. He also volunteered his time for many years in the Seafood Charlie's booth at the Lakeside Family Festival.

An avid fisherman and traveler, James especially enjoyed the freedom of retirement, spending it fishing the Cape Cod Canal and taking numerous trips. His favorite destination was Las Vegas, which he visited as often as possible. Above all else, James treasured spending time with his family and found his greatest joy in being a grandfather to his three grandsons.

In addition to his wife, Elaine, he is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Barker and her husband, Joseph, of Gray, Maine, and Jocelyn Shinney and her husband, Andrew, of Bridgewater; his three grandsons, Caleb and Austin Barker and Jackson Shinney; his brothers, Allen Wood and his wife, Lynne, and Spencer Wood; as well as other family.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date.
