

Joao F. Camara, age 75, of New Bedford, passed away from complications from pancreatic cancer on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Merces (Bettencourt) Camara with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.
Born in Sao Miguel, Portugal, he was the son of the late Joao and Fernanda (Borges) Camara.
Joao worked as a machine operator for many years, until his retirement. He was a simple man who loved spending time with his family and friends. Joao loved animals, feeding the birds daily, and watching soccer games. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, and will be deeply missed.
Survivors in addition to his loving wife, Merces, are his children, Sandra Tibbs and her husband Philip of TN, Stephen Camara and his wife Rita of Acushnet, and Michelle Camara and her fiancé Christopher Taglianetti of Westport; a brother, Venildo Camara of Portugal; a sister, Dalia Fragoso of Canada; five grandchildren, Alison Brown, Kaitlyn Taylor, Adam Camara, Ryan Camara, Jonathan Camara, and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late John Camara and the brother of the late Gualter and Victor Camara.
His visitation will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00pm in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd. New Bedford, MA 02745. His funeral service will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 at 10:00am in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1359 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford.
