Jose Luis Tavares

Jose Luis Tavares, a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on January 30, 2025 at the Alden Court Nursing Home in Fairhaven, at the age 85. Born on Valentine's Day February 14, 1939 in Saint Michael, Portugal. A proud US citizen, Jose spent much of his youth in New Bedford and raised his family in Acushnet.

He was the loving husband of the late Rowena D. (Silva) Tavares. Jose was a devoted father to Steven Tavares of Long Island New York, Lisa Alves and her husband Michael of Fairhaven, and Linda Jaillet and her husband James of Gardner. He was the proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Michael, Jessica, Tessa, Joseph, Matthew and Julia. Jose was the son of the late Manuel and Georgiana (Medeiros) Tavares.

Jose was employed for 45 years as a presser at Cliftex prior to his retirement. Jose commitment and dedication to his work was admired by all who knew him. After retiring, Jose and Rowena enjoyed 14 years living in Florida next to their life long friends chasing the endless summer and spending time at New Smyrna Beach. Jose enjoyed tending to his fruit trees and relaxing by his pool. He will be remembered as a loving husband, family man and friend.

In his youth, Jose played soccer with the Saint Michael's Club. He enjoyed spending time with his children crabbing on Cape Cod with his homemade nets. Jose was an avid Red Sox fan. Along with baseball, Jose enjoyed the World Cup and watching westerns. Jose will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
