

Leroy Medeiros, 83, of New Bedford passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Rita Ann (Rapoza) Medeiros, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Miguel and Cecelia (Vieira) Mederios, Leroy was a lifelong resident of the city and was a longtime congregant of the former St. Mary’s Church, now St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in New Bedford.
Leroy played baseball and basketball for the CYO of New Bedford. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1961, and continued his education at Bristol Community College. Leroy proudly served the City of New Bedford as a police officer for thirty years, retiring as a detective on December 4, 2000. He was a dedicated member and former treasurer of the New Bedford Police Union, where he formed many lasting friendships throughout his career.
Leroy coached his son’s baseball team, and he was an avid fan of all Boston sports and enjoyed watching them with his family.
Above all, Leroy cherished his family. He enjoyed attending his grandsons’ sporting events and theatre productions. He especially enjoyed family vacations and spending time with those he loved, creating memories that will be treasured for years to come.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Brian Medeiros and his wife Susan of Mrytle Beach, SC; his daughter, Pamela Boudreau and her husband Paul “Pudge” of New Bedford; two grandsons, Ryan Boudreau and Adam Boudreau and his fiancé Makayla Cruz; his sister, Shirley Sylvia; his sister-in-law, Catherine Olsen and her husband Tor; nieces and nephews, Michael Medeiros and his wife Patty, Cheryl Medeiros, Lisa Heleen and her husband Mark, Mark Medeiros, Barry Sylvia and his wife Patricia and Debra Sylvia Dias; great-nieces and great-nephews, Michael and family, Nicklaus and family, Ryan, Danielle and family, Alex, Jenna, Jack, Owen and Jillian. He is also survived by very close friends, Darlene and Mike Latimer and their family, Donna and Bill Horrocks and their family and Sharon and Ray Silva and their family.
He was the brother of the late, Norman Medeiros; brother-in-law of the late, Raymond Sylvia and the late Kathleen Medeiros and son-in-law of the late Antone and Irene Rapoza.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Alden Court for the compassionate and loving care Leroy received while he was there.
His funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 5:30 PM at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 2:30 to 5:30. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Alden Court Activities Fund, 389 Alden Rd., Fairhaven, MA or to a charity of your choice.
