Maria Benevides

Born in St. Michael Azores, a daughter of the late Serafim and Maria (Amarelo) Resendes, she grew up there before moving to New Bedford in 1958. She had been residing at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home for the last 3 years cared for by a loving and caring staff.

Maria worked as a seamstress for Cape Cod Sportswear for 32 years. She was an outstanding cook and enjoyed feeding her loved ones regardless of their hunger or lack there of. Maria was a skilled seamstress reveling in producing beautiful clothes inexpensively. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and playing dominoes. She was a devout Catholic and nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Paul Benevides and his wife Maria, Peter Benevides and his wife Kelly, Lucy Hassey and her companion Ed Braga; son-in-law, Timothy Macedo; brothers, Anibal and Joao Pereira; five grandchildren, Nicholas Benevides and his wife Kristen, Thomas Benevides and his wife Melinda, Dr. Christina Benevides-Daley and her husband Sean, Alexandria Macedo, and Kennedy Benevides; six great grandchildren, Aubrey, Austin, Grayson, Parker, Liam and Wyatt; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Laura Macedo and sister of the late Luis, Serafim, Isidro Resendes, Jose Pereira and Maria C. DeMelo.

Her funeral will be Monday, August 23, 2021 at 9 a.m. from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 3-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the food pantry of your choice.
