Maria Gloria Camara

Maria G. (Sousa) Camara, 79, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Manuel Camara, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage.

Born in Portugal, Maria was the daughter of the late Manuel Caetano Sousa and Maria (Rego) Sousa. She worked for many years as a talented hairdresser and cosmetologist. Maria was also a gifted seamstress, using her skills generously to help those around her.

A devout and faithful communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, Maria’s life was deeply rooted in her Catholic faith. She found joy in cooking for her family, and giving endlessly of herself to others. Her selflessness and love were felt by all who knew her.

Above all, Maria's greatest devotion was to her family. She found pride and joy in raising her children and cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love was constant, her care unconditional.

She is survived by her loving sons, Daniel Camara of New Bedford and Ricardo Camara of TN; four cherished grandchildren, Mory Camara, Chloe Camara, Amanda Camara Letourneau, and Bryan Rebello; and six adored great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, one brother, and many nieces and nephews. Maria was predeceased by two siblings in Portugal.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 9:00 AM from Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Rock Funeral Home.
