Maria A. Nunes

Born in St. Michael, Azores, she was the beloved daughter of Antonio Soares and Auxilia (Carreiro) Ferro.

Maria was a graduate of New Bedford High School. She was a caring and kind-hearted woman whose infectious smile could light up every room she entered. She was strong, determined, and truly a fighter throughout her battle. Above all, family was at the heart of Maria’s life, and the time she spent surrounded by those she loved was especially precious to her.

Maria shared 11 loving years with her beloved husband, David Joseph, with whom she created many cherished memories. She was also a devoted mother and took great pride in her children.

An adventurous spirit, Maria found joy in many of life’s pleasures. She loved crafting, cooking, the ocean, snorkeling, playing in the snow, and traveling, especially to Maui. She enjoyed long walks in nature and discovering new experiences. Her beloved cat, Finn, was a special source of comfort and peace to her.

Maria will be deeply missed by her husband, David; her children, Justin Nunes and his wife, Jessica, of Dartmouth, and Katelynn Nunes and her partner Darryn Fernandes of Fairhaven; her brother, Gilbert Soares and his wife, Carla, of Acushnet; her sisters, Helen Batista of Fairhaven, Marylou Costa and her husband, Luis, of Fairhaven, Lucy Fagundo and her husband, Roger, of New Bedford, and Anna Sousa and her husband, Mario, of New Bedford; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Maria’s beautiful smile, caring heart, adventurous spirit, and unwavering strength will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Her visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, followed by words of remembrance by family at 5:30pm in ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745.
