Maria Guiomar (de Frias Silva) Silvestre, age 64, of East Freetown, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. She was the beloved wife and best friend of Carlos Silvestre with whom she shared 45 years of marriage.
Born in Sao Miguel, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria E. (de Frias) da Silva.
Maria, known to most as Guiomar, moved to the United States at 13 years old and through hard work and sacrifice, she and her husband built a beautiful life for her and her family. At 18 she started working as a stitcher and did this for over 20 years between Calvin Clothing and Justin Clothing. She then worked briefly at Sippican Nursing Home in Mattapoisett, and her last place of employment was Harvey Window in Dartmouth.
She was a true matriarch and the glue that held her family together. She lived for her family and grandchildren, but embraced and loved everyone she met. She had the gift of hospitality and showed her love for people by feeding them something amazing that she either baked or cooked up in her kitchen. Guiomar always spoke her mind and was known for her wild sense of humor and infectious laugh. She loved her shopping adventures with Stefaney, long car rides to the ocean with Carlos, and had a passion for gardening and flowers, which helped to relieve her stress and brought great comfort when needed. She also shared this passion with her daughter Stacey, who inherited her green thumb. Guiomar will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who loved her people deeply. All who knew her will miss her immensely.
In addition to her loving husband, Carlos, are her two daughters, Stefaney Frias Bourget and her husband Daniel of New Bedford, and Stacey Casey and her husband Jamie of Dartmouth; five grandchildren: Skyla Garcia, Tyler Silvestre, Bronx Bourget, Cross Bourget, and Ashton Casey; a sister, Lucia Alves and her husband Carlos of New Bedford; a brother, Gilberto da Silva and his wife Isabel of S. Dartmouth, and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Kelby Silvestre.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at 10:00am at the Christian Fellowship Center, 822 Church St. New Bedford, MA 02745. Everyone is to go directly to church. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. Her visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 from 5:00 – 8:00pm in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745. www.rock-funeralhome.com
