

Mary (Polchlopek) Piekut, age 100 years, of Johnston, RI formerly of New Bedford, MA passed away peacefully after a long illness on Friday, January 23, 2015 with her son, Tom by her side. She was the widow of Alphonse Piekut, daughter of the late John and Aniela (Jamrogiewicz) Polchlopek, and sister of the late Sophie Mendrala-Misiaszek.
Mary was a lifelong resident of New Bedford until 2003 when she moved to Rhode Island to be closer to her family. She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1932, and was employed as a laboratory technician with the Acushnet Company for 25 years, retiring in 1976. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who was loved and will be greatly missed by her friends and family. She always had cheerful words, a happy song or a great smile for those around her, and loved giving Polish lessons to anyone who would listen.
Survivors include her Sons: Al Piekut and his wife Dolores of Vienna, VA, and Tom Piekut and his wife Joan Cicione of East Greenwich, RI; Grandchildren: Sarah Piekut of Reston, VA, Audrey Piekut-Thaiss and her husband Chris of Marietta, GA, James Piekut and his wife Abigail of Atlanta, GA and Richard Piekut of Vienna, VA. Step-Grandchildren: Erich Cicione and his wife Carolyn of Warwick, RI, and Lauren Cicione of Charleston, SC. Great-Grandchildren: Julian, Adrian and Isabel Thaiss, Luca and Sabine Cicione, and her favorite niece Janet Moreau and her husband Richard of New Bedford, MA.
The family extends special thanks to the staff at Briarcliffe Gardens Assisted Living where she was lovingly cared for in her final years.
Her Funeral will be held THURSDAY, January 29, 2015 at 9:00 am from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 235 No. Front St., New Bedford followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to her Mass from 9 to 10:30 am in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of your choosing.
