Nelson Fernandes

Nelson Fernandes, 86, of New Bedford died Saturday, July 21, 2012. He was the husband of Hilda Carreiro (Francis) Fernandes. To whom he had been married to for 48 years.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Natalie (Fernandes) Rogers-Schelter, he was a life-long resident of the area.

Mr. Fernandes served on the USS Phobos in the US Navy during WWII. He worked as a Cloth Cutter at Cliftex for over thirty years before retiring. He was a member of the Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 VFW and was a former member of the Panthers Golden Ages.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son Steven Fernandes of New Bedford; a step-son, Stephen D. Francis and his wife Coleen of Vineyard Haven; step-grandson, Christopher Francis also of Vineyard Haven; four grandchildren; several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also the step-father of the late Michael Francis and brother of the late Clevia Braley and Evelyn Fournier.

Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral mass Friday, August 3, 2012 at 9 AM in St. Mary’s Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd, New Bedford. Burial with Military Honors will follow in MA National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to, St. Mary’s Church, 106 Illinois St., New Bedford, MA 02745 or DAV Chapter #7, 19 Willis St., New Bedford, MA 02740. Arrangements are in the care of the ROCK Funeral Home.
