Renato (Rene) J. Vieira, 77, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and the music of The Beatles, which brought him comfort in his final moments.
Renato was the beloved husband of the late Arlinda C. (Gorgulho) Vieira, with whom he shared 35 wonderful years of marriage. Born in Faial, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose and Olga (Silva) Vieira.
Through hard work and determination, Renato built a successful career. He owned and operated Vieira Home Improvements for more than 20 years before joining Aerovox Company, where he worked until his retirement.
A proud United States Army veteran, Renato honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. He carried that same sense of dedication, humility, and quiet strength throughout his life.
Renato found his greatest joy in his family, especially the time he spent with his children and grandchildren, who were the center of his world. He also loved spoiling his grand-pups, Teddy, Daisy, Apollo and Oliver with treats and affection—they will miss him dearly. An avid fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins, Renato also enjoyed gardening, camping, eating fresh lobster, playing Dominos with his dear friend Jodi, and listening to The Beatles. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he loved Jesus deeply.
Those who knew Renato will remember him as a kind, generous, and gentle soul. He had a contagious smile, a joyful spirit, and a heart that was always open to helping others. Slow to anger and quick to laugh, he found happiness in life's simple blessings. His warmth, compassion, unwavering faith, and unconditional love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He will always be remembered for "How you gonna act dude?!"
He is survived by his loving children, Susan Gendreau and her husband, John, of New Bedford; Richard Vieira and his wife, Lori, of Smithsburg, Maryland; and Alyson Vieira of Florida. He also leaves behind his beloved sisters, Maria Coucelos of New Bedford and Theresa Andrade and her husband Jose of Florida, his sister-in-law Laurinda Gorgulho and brother-in-law Brent Marchant both of Ontario, Canada; his cherished grandchildren, Joshua, Abigail, Nicole, Emma, Benjamin, Gracie, Caroline, and Lily; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Renato was predeceased by his brothers, Mario and Carlos Vieira, his brother-in-law, Jose Coucelos and his sister-in-law Maria Marchant.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Southcoast Hospice and to his devoted caregiver and dear friend, Jodi Acevedo, for their compassionate and loving care.
Renato's legacy of kindness, generosity, steadfast faith, and unconditional love for his family will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Though he will be deeply missed, his gentle spirit, contagious smile, and the countless memories he created will continue to inspire all whose lives he touched.
Renato had a special request for everyone to wear bright, happy colors at his services.
