

Born in Acushnet, a son of the late Louis and Lillian (Jackson) Elgar he was a lifelong area resident.
“Dicky” was a chef most of his adult life working in several restaurants here and in Florida until he opened a breakfast restaurant on Rivet Street. Mr. Elgar left Rivet Street to open The Hen House in Acushnet, a well-known restaurant in the 80s and 90s for their All You Can Eat Chicken. He and his daughter ran the Hen House until he retired in 2008. He also co-owned the family farm Jackson’s Orchards with his brother, Billy. Mr. Elgar had a love for farming and was one of the original members that founded the Apple and Peach festival in Acushnet. Mr. Elgar was a member of the Acushnet Lion’s Club, and he was part of the Chef’s Association.
He is survived by his daughter, Theresa and her husband Stephan O’Connor of E. Freetown; siblings, Lorraine Thompson of Rochester, Ruth and her husband Manny Texeira of Dighton, Jim MacFarlane and his wife Emily of KY; Cousin Joey Vincent of Norwood; and beloved grandchildren, Samantha O’Connor, Jackson St. Don, and great granddaughter Bette Moynihan O’Connor. He was the brother of the late Alicia Plante, Ruth Benson, and Louis “Billy” Elgar.
