Richard L. Lafleur, 94, of New Bedford passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024 after a brief illness in The Oaks. He was the husband of the late Georgette (Gonsalves) Lafleur with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in Acushnet, a son of the late Henry and Rose (Lemieux) Lafleur he was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Lafleur graduated from New Bedford High School. He went on to serve 2 years in the United States Army during the Korean War, and had 4 years active duty in the Naval Reserve. Richard worked as an insurance agent for John Hancock for 24 years and later he retired from the Bristol County Trial Court in 1993.
Richard loved cooking for his family and friends and enjoyed many holidays and cookouts with his parents, his sister Mina, and her husband Jimmy, and nieces Michelle, Susan, Jane and nephew Bob. He enjoyed fishing, quahogging, clamming, jazz and blues music, and in the summer the Portuguese Feast. He also enjoyed many years working at the Senhor de Padre Club in the kitchen during the feast with his friend Lenny Santos, and spending time at the Panther’s Club. Richard was a strong and loving man and had said his favorite song was “I did it my way”, and no words could be more true. He was much loved and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
He is survived by his loving children, Carolyn Bisso of New Bedford, Cathy DaSilva and her husband Charlie of New Bedford, Gary Lafleur of New Bedford, and Brian Lafleur and his wife Lori of Acushnet; grandchildren, Kortney Lafleur, Megan Lafleur, Molly Lafleur, Gina Phelps and her husband Tyler, and Matthew Bisso; great grandchildren, Nora, Lea, Tayanah, and Ariah. He was the brother of the late Lumina “Mina” Lacasse, and father-in-law to the late Raymond Bisso and Brenda Lafleur.
His visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 9:30am to 11:30am, followed by his funeral service at 11:30am in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, 559 Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford.
