Born on May 6, 1938, in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Robert and Helen Spencer, he was the second of four boys. He spent the first years of his boyhood in Fairhaven prior to a move to Freetown. He began his grand adventure at a young age, signing up to serve his country as an engineer in the United States Airforce at age 17.
After returning from the service, he soon met his wife of over 60 years, Cynthia McCarthy. Together, they raised a daughter and son, Stacey Spencer Procida, and Terrence Spencer, and two foster children, Ernesto and Felix Garcia.
He will be remembered as a devoted father and caretaker, and as a true character above all else. Richard enjoyed like a few others the art of storytelling, never missing the opportunity to share a tale, to make someone laugh. Richard was an avid reader and spent as much time as could be helped outdoors, tending his cranberry bogs, his woodlot and garden. He loved adventure and enjoyed the sailing trips he took like little else.
Richard was a devotee to his fellow man, and a man who would not suffer injustice. He remained firm in his morals throughout his life and kept an open heart and mind into his late years. He committed himself to growth; he faced all parts of himself with equal bravery. He found himself to be a dedicated friend of Bill W. The saying, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" did not apply. Richard fought always to make himself a better man. He was loving husband, father, and grandfather, and committed his late years to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two of his brothers, Bob and Hartley Spencer. He is survived by his brother Bruce, wife Cynthia, daughter Stacey, and her husband Jeff, son Terrence and his wife Martha, alongside his four grandsons, Cameron, Bryce, Carlin, and Ethan.
He'll be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his wisdom, and the stories that may one day outlive us all. He will be missed dearly.
Visitation will be held Saturday, October 31, 2026 from 10AM to 12:00PM with a Memorial service to follow at 12:00PM in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA
