Robert J. Smusz

He was the beloved husband of Sandra (Misiaszek) Smusz, with whom he shared 32 wonderful years of marriage.

Born in New Bedford, Robert was the son of the late Joseph J. and Louise (Nolin) Smusz. He was a graduate of Apponequet Regional High School and enjoyed a successful career as an Acoustic Engineer for more than 40 years. Following his retirement, he continued serving his community as a Tremblay van driver, transporting children with special needs.

Robert’s greatest joy was his family, who were always his number one priority. He took great pride in instilling strong family values and traditions in his children and grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. A gentle soul with a huge heart, Robert was known for his kindness, compassion, and willingness to put others before himself. His warm personality, contagious smile, and genuine concern for others made him a friend to all who knew him.

An avid golfer and member of the Rochester Golf Club, Robert loved spending time on the course and traveling the world with his wife. He enjoyed singing, playing cards, sharing a good meal, especially pasta—and celebrating the holidays. He took particular pride in decorating his home with Christmas lights each year, bringing joy to family, friends, and neighbors alike.

In addition to his wife, Sandra, he is survived by his loving daughter, Christine Champoux of Fitchburg; his stepdaughters, Sonja Backstrom and her husband, Steven, of Acushnet, and Erica Knudsen of Acushnet; and his cherished grandchildren, Julia and Lexa Champoux, and Sarah and Ross Backstrom.

He was the father of the late Michael Smusz and the brother of the late Brenda Smusz.

Robert’s gentle presence, unwavering love for his family, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date for all to attend.
