Beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother
With hearts full of love and sorrow, we share the passing of Shirley A. (Mitchell) Souza, 89, of Acushnet, who left us unexpectedly on Friday, January 31, 2025. She was the devoted wife of the late Richard A. Souza, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and laughter.
Born in Nottingham, England, Shirley was the cherished daughter of the late Albert and Florence (Buxton) Mitchell. Though she grew up across the ocean, her heart found its home in Acushnet, where she built a beautiful life surrounded by family and friends.
Shirley’s warmth and kindness extended far beyond her own family. She dedicated years of service as a dietary aide at St. Luke’s Hospital and the Falmouth School Department, always ensuring that those in her care felt comforted and well-nourished.
Her zest for life was undeniable. Shirley found joy in the little things—a trip to the casino, the companionship of animals, a delicious sweet treat, or an evening spent watching her favorite game shows. She loved to travel, embracing the magic of Florida, California, and New York City, where she marveled at Broadway shows like Phantom of the Opera and the dazzling Rockefeller Rockettes. Some of her fondest memories were made in Las Vegas, especially at the Tropicana, where she sipped margaritas and reveled in the vibrant energy of the city.
An avid Red Sox fan, Shirley’s passion for baseball was only rivaled by the boundless love she had for her family. She was the heart of every gathering, the Queen of her family, and the pillar of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest treasures, and her love for them knew no bounds.
Shirley is survived by her beloved children, Richard A. Souza, Stephen W. Souza, Deborah Losordo, and Sharon Jovin, along with her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry her legacy of love and joy forward.
In accordance with her wishes, services will be private and are under the care of Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the ASPCA-Angell.
