Born in New Bedford, Steven was a graduate of Bishop Stang High School and attended Mass College of Fine Arts in Boston.
Steven was a vivacious consumer of books, news and current events with a mastery of arts and culture that would rival any college professor. As an artist and a writer, Steve lived a creative and purposeful life, contributing to the charming fabric of New Bedford which was always home to him. Most don’t know about the selfless efforts he undertook to care for those around him, endearing himself to his friends and to the community in his gentle ways.
English author James Allen once said, “A man sooner or later discovers that he is the master-gardener of his soul, the director of his life”, and Steven’s garden was extraordinary.
Survivors include two brothers; Robert Mello and his wife Diane of Hudson, MA, Richard J. Mello and his wife Jennifer Zankel of Port Washington, NY and a sister Leslie Mello of London. He also had many nieces and nephews.
