Affectionately known as Teddy to everyone who knew him, Ted Lopes passed away peacefully of heart disease on July 23 surrounded by his loving wife and children. After a valiant 10 year battle with Lymphoma, he was recently diagnosed with heart disease that quickly progressed. Ted was the devoted husband of Joyce D. (Jardin) Lopes with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. He was the son of the late Manuel and Mary (Almeida) Lopes and the brother of the late Donald Lopes.
After graduating from New Bedford Vocational High School in 1961, Ted was employed by US Furniture, JC Rhodes and was a union carpenter for many years. He attended Fitchburg State College where he earned his Vocational Teacher Certification and went on to work at Diman Vocational High School in Fall River where he retired after 20 years of teaching. Ted was a proud Veteran, serving in both the Army National Guard and on active duty during the Vietnam War.
What a wonderful, full life Ted lived. He loved to go fishing and looked forward to his fly fishing trips to New York, second only to his world travels with his beloved Joyce. They enjoyed countless trips to visit family in Madeira & St Michael, & to Portugal, London, Paris, Japan, Alaska, Hawaii and many more places far and near. He was a fan of all the Boston sports teams but he was the biggest fan of his four grandchildren, rarely missing a dance recital, basketball, soccer, or hockey game. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and monthly dinners with The Jardin 20 Cousins Club.
In addition to his wife, Joyce, Ted is survived by his loving children, of whom he was immensely proud. Kimberli (Lopes) Bettencourt and her partner Gary Gagne, Matthew Lopes and his wife Susan, his grandchildren Madison Lopes, Spencer Lopes, Myles Bettencourt, Morgan Bettencourt and his great grandson, Theo Lopes. He was so proud to be their “Pappy”.
Ted’s family would like to thank the many caregivers he had over the years, in particular Dr. David Fisher and the incredible Lymphoma team at Dana Faber Cancer Institute for 10 years of dedicated and tireless support and his PCP and dear friend, Dr. Jordan Gularek. The family would also like to thank the Doctors and Cardiac staff at The Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, especially Ted’s favorite nurses Chelsea Brittany & Tracy for their love and care during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation to the Dana Faber Cancer Institute or The Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Ted’s memory.
Due to the current restrictions regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, at the request of the family, services will be private. Arrangements are in the care of the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745. To leave a note of condolence: www.rock-funeralhome.com
