

Born in New Bedford, son of the late Manuel and Eleanor (Rothwell) Tavares, he was a lifelong resident of the city.
Mr. Tavares served in the United States Army. He later worked for the City of New Bedford until his retirement.
Tom’s knowledge of music was extensive. He was well versed in all genres but was an expert on 50’s and rhythm and blues music. He was also interested in nature and would spend hours reading National Geographic magazine. He also loved watching all New England sport teams, especially the Red Sox.
He is survived by two sisters, Elaine Girouard and her husband Ronald of New Bedford and June Meunier (and late brother-in-law Donald Meunier) of Acushnet; two nephews, Michael Girouard and his wife Sarah; and John Girouard; a niece Jenna Girouard; he was the great uncle of Aiden and Lily Girouard; he is also survived by two uncles and several cousins.
Tom’s family would like to send special thanks to the third floor staff at Southeast Massachusetts Health and Rehabilitation Center for their exceptional care, kindness and compassion.
His memorial service will be at St. John Neumann Church on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
