Known as "Mandy" by many of her family and friends, she was born in 1941 to Arthur and Irma Spruill and was raised on the family homeplace just outside of Vanceboro in a little area known as "Spruill Town." It was there she was loved and doted on by her sisters and older brother. She learned the value of hard work early on and as she grew up that served her well as she went on to own and operate the Gaskins Hog and Chicken Farm with her husband at the time. She also worked away from the farm at Jay Apparel for nine years and later at Moen for twenty years before her retirement. She was a member of Sherwood Forest F.W.B. Church where she actively served the Lord for many years before her health began to decline and she was not able to attend.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Guylene Gaskins Thomas (Gary); two granddaughters, Amanda Powers Bennett (Rex) and Chelsea Powers Stilley (Chris); sisters, Nellie Spruill Powell, Lillie Spruill Ipock, Celia Spruill Whitford (Dalton); sister-in-law, Billie Jean Spruill; great grandchildren, Mandy Jo Bennett, Brooks Allen Bennett, Eva Kate Bennett; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Irma Spruill; her twin sister, Martha Faye Spruill; and brothers, Arthur "Shorty" Spruill and Jimmie Spruill.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29th at Cotten Funeral Home followed by the service at 3 p.m. in the Chapel. She will be laid to rest at the Gaskins Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in her name to the CarolinaEast Foundation, 2000 Neuse Boulevard, New Bern, NC 28560.
Arrangements are entrusted to Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
