

Austin (Gene) Edgington, 1932 – 2016, passed away peacefully in his home from cancer on Friday. Gene was born in York , PA to Elsie and Austin E. Edgington, the youngest of three children. In 1956 he married Ann Darbie and later divorced. In 2004, he married Sue Netland of Detroit Lakes , Minnesota . The couple enjoyed 13 years of happy marriage.
Gene graduated from West York High School in 1950 and attended Pennsylvania State University from 1951 to 1955 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. He held management positions with corporate agricultural companies until 1969 when he purchased Brockway Farm and Home, a farm and garden supply store in Brockway , PA. He also established a successful home fuel delivery business, and later purchased a second store in Dubois , PA. An active member of the Brockway Kiwanis, he formed the Brockway Businessmen Association in 1982. In 1986 he retired and moved to New Bern, North Carolina .
Gene was an avid sailor who sailed the Great Lakes region and later the inter-coastal waterways of the eastern seaboard. Gene served as a member of the Blackbeard Sailing Club. He was also an avid woodworker who crafted furniture, wooden games, and small pieces. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, sons Austin and Joshua, step-children Eric and Michael Netland.
Family and friends are invited attend a memorial service at Cotten Funeral Home, 2201 Neuse Blvd, New Bern, NC, on Sept. 1 at 2pm, with a visitation at 1pm.
