
Berleen was a graduate of East Carolina University. She was an active member of Christ Church,
was founder of Garber United Methodist Church’s kindergarten,the Board of Directors of Bate
Foundation, member of Trent Woods Garden Club, and member of New Bern Golf and Country
Club.
She is preceeded in death by her husband, Norman Leslie Burnette Jr; Companion Harold H. Bate her parents, James Battle
Bryant, Jr. and Lula Anliza Lewis of Tarboro, NC; two brothers, James Battle Bryant, III, Bobby Ray
Bryant; three sisters, Catherine Bryant Whitley, Blanche Bryant Murr, Virginia Bryant Griffin.
Berleen is survived by her two daughters Diana B. Dean and husband, Howard of Charlotte, NC,
and Debra B. Mullinix and husband Benny of New Bern, NC. Her sisters, Mae Bryant Tabor of
Norfolk, VA and Peggy Bryant Dunstan and husband, Jack of Stafford, VA and sister-in-law, Patsy
Bryant of Tarboro, NC. Grandchildren, Courtenay D. Schreibeis and husband David of Charlotte,
NC, Jonathan B. Dean and wife Jammie of Charlotte, NC. One great-grandson Jackson J. Dean.
Three step-grandchildren Paige and Steve Johnson, Candi and George Wiggins, and Benson and
Patricia Mullinix, and many special nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends and relatives at Cotten Funeral Home, Friday, January 8, 2016 from 5
p.m. – 7p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1p.m. at Christ Episcopal
Church with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to Christ Episcopal Church, New Bern YMCA
or charity of one’s choice.
