Bertha Register Boyd Zirnheld

The daughter of the late Theodore R. and Tillie T. Register, she was a lifelong resident of Cove City, NC and the owner of Boyd’s Beauty Shop for over 50 years. She retired from Lenoir Community College where she was chairperson of the Cosmetology Department.

Her church, Core Creek F.W.B., was a source of strength and inspiration for 45 years. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star at both the local and state levels, including the position of Grand Organist. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends, being involved with various organizations, and traveling. She touched the lives of many through her work, musical talent, optimistic and adventurous spirit, and capacity for love.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Robert B. Boyd (Bob) and by her second husband Jim Zirnheld. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Betty and Steve Gannon of Richmond, VA; two grandsons John Gannon of New York City and Alex Gannon of Richmond, VA; three half-brothers and their wives Don and Phyllis Register of Fayetteville, NC, Theodore (Jr.) and Ginny Register of Winter Haven, FL, and Bill and Sandy Register of Fayetteville, NC; one half-sister Sybil Joyner of Bahama, NC, and a devoted cousin Emma and her husband Frank Williford.

The family is grateful to the friends, neighbors, and caregivers who have shown her love and support in recent years, to her pastor Rev. Mike Barnhill for his ever-present support, to her special friends Elinor Hawkins and Florence Philyaw for 50 years of friendship, and to Dr. Kent Lucas and her nurses at CarolinaEast Medical Center for their skill and compassion.

Family will receive friends Tuesday July 5, 2011 at Cotten Funeral Home from 6-8PM. The service will be held at Core Creek F. W. B. Church in Cove City at 11AM with Rev. Mike Barnhill officiating. Interment will follow in the Cove City Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.
