Charles Barton "Charlie" Henke

Charles Barton “Charlie” Henke, 80, passed away on August 22, 2026, at Carolina East Medical Center. He was born on April 11, 1946, in Temple, Texas, the son of Charlcie Barton Henke and brother of Betty Henke (Charles) Jacques. Upon graduation from Temple HS, Charlie attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating with the Class of 1968.

Charlie proudly served his country for 30 years in the United States Navy. He retired as a Captain, USNR, after a distinguished career of service and dedication to his country. Following his military service, Charlie built a 19-year career with Corning Incorporated.

Upon retirement, Charlie and Sharon made their home in Fairfield Harbour in New Bern, North Carolina, for 23 years. Charlie was deeply involved in his community and served for many years as chairperson of the Property Control Committee, giving generously of his time and talents to help make Fairfield Harbour a better place for his neighbors.

Charlie loved to play golf and enjoyed the friendships, fellowship, and time outdoors that came with the game. He was also a devoted supporter of his sons and loved being in the stands for their sporting events. He remained a passionate supporter of the United States Naval Academy and attended home football games for many years. Whether cheering for his sons or for the Midshipmen, Charlie took great pride in the people and institutions he loved.

Charlie lived a life defined not by how loudly he spoke, but by the strength of his character, his devotion to his family, his service to his country, and the kindness he showed to others. He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, humor, and service that will continue through the family and friends whose lives he touched.

Charlie was the beloved husband of Sharon McCuddin Henke, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Together, they raised two sons, Charles “Bart” Barton Henke Jr, wife, Amy Fenske, and Michael Paul Henke, wife, Dana Giampiccolo.

He was a proud grandfather to Quinn Henke, 14; Everett Henke, 10; and Ellie Henke, 4; and Bart’s stepchildren, Kaylie, 27 and Ally Lewkowski, 25. His family was a source of great love and pride throughout his life.

Charlie will be laid to rest at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium in early 2028, bringing him home to the Academy that played such an important role in his life and to the place that represented his enduring commitment to his country and fellow Midshipmen.
