Curtis was born on September 16, 1941, in Morgan County, Alabama, to the late Ervin and Bertha King. He proudly served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with honor. He completed a tour in Vietnam, serving logistically as a Heavy Vehicle Operator in Motor Transport.
After retiring from the military, Curtis ran a small business in the community, and in his later years, he worked at the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport until he fully retired.
During the 1980s, Curtis volunteered his time in Havelock as a softball coach for various youth leagues. He enjoyed the positive impact of seeing the players’ self-esteem, resilience, and love for the sport grow. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and watching college football. He especially loved watching the Alabama Crimson Tide play and win.
He was married to his sweetheart, Teruko, for over 46 years, who preceded him in death.
Those left to treasure his memory are his children, Curtis King Jr. and Mary King; his five grandchildren, Jennifer Baker (Michael), Julian (Samantha), William (Lauren), Eric Wilcutt, and Donald Wilcutt; and his seven great-grandchildren, Alessa, Mya, Dixie, Kyler, Alex Baker, Cole Fischer, and Layla Fischer.
His funeral service, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Lighthouse Assembly of God in Havelock, officiated by Pastor Kenny McCoy. His interment at the Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC will be held at a later date.
