Glenda Darlene Boyd (Chike), age 66, of New Bern, NC passed away on October 13, 2024 after a short battle with cancer. Darlene was born on March 20, 1958 in Port St. Lucie, FL to the late Paul T. & Shelta Jane Chike.
Darlene graduated in 1976 from Dover High School. She attended Wesley College and earned her Associate’s Degree in Paralegal Studies. Darlene’s true passion showed up when she entered the world of real estate. Earning top awards for multiple years including Century 21’s Top Producing Agent in NC, Pinnacle Quality Service Awards, The Presidents Award and Centurion Award. She loved working with her community!
Darlene loved her family. In her early “mom years” she dedicated all of her time to her girls - driving to after school activities, chaperoning field trips, and always making sure every holiday was a memorable one. Christmas was her favorite holiday from decorating the tree to cooking the best holiday meals. Every Christmas she made homemade gingerbread and hosted class gingerbread decorating parties when her girls were younger. She kept the magic alive even when her girls were grown, always saying that if you believe it will always be true.
Darlene met her husband, CA at a New Years Party in 1999 and the rest is history. Quickly after making the move to Raleigh and then eventually to New Bern they built a wonderful life together. They have ridden thousands of miles on their motorcycles to Sturgess SD, Key West, Daytona, Maine, Dollywood , Pigeon Forge and the Texas Blue Ridge Mountains. Together they have shared successful business adventures and a philanthropic spirit.
Darlene was a devoted mother and wife, but her favorite title was Grammy. She attended many baseball games, dance recitals and put in hundreds of hours of Grammy time. Trips to the camper, out on the boat crabbing, fun in the sun at the pool and beach, feeding ducks at union point park, and swinging on the playground are just a few of the places she loved to take them. When one of her grands would get sick, she would drive to Delaware to take care of them until they could go back to school.
Darlene was an extremely talented seamstress, learning from her own Grandmother. She loved decorating, crafting and of course shopping!
She is survived by, her husband C.A. Boyd, Daughter, Courtney (Christopher) Voshell of Camden, DE, Step-Son Andrew Boyd of Asheville NC, and three grand children Greyson, Amelia and Grady.
She is predeceased by her youngest daughter, Caitlyn Walpole and brother, Tommy Chike.
Our family would like to send a sincere thank you to Carolina East Medical Centers 4th floor nursing and oncology staff. Their level of care and compassion was more than we could have asked for during the past few months.
A Celebration of Life is planned for 1 p.m. on November 22, 2024 at the New Bern Golf & Country Club.
Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Darlene Boyd.
