
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas H. and Mildred M. Durr, his brothers, Raymond C. and Arthur E., and his loving wife of 53 years, Elva Jane (Williams).
He is survived by his sister H. Louise Natzle of Endicott, NY, his and Jane's 5 children, Kathleen J. Durr, Wilmington, NC, Thomas E. Durr (Lorraine) Fayetteville, NC, Robert A. Durr (Karlene Bloom), Long Island, VA, William S. Durr (Beth), Asheville, NC, and Amy D. Heine (Mark), Chapel Hill, NC. He and Jane have 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, Emily Durr, Durham, NC, Sarah (Matthew) Holmes (Declan), Atlanta, GA, Lucas Durr, Winston-Salem, NC, Jason Durr, Columbia, SC, Lauren (Perry) Whitaker (Gabriel and Georgia), Clayton, NC, Caitlin and Allison Durr, Asheville, NC, and Rebecca and Clare Heine, Chapel Hill, NC. He also leaves a dear friend and gentle, lovely lady, Ms. Molly Glavasich, New Bern, NC, who together softened the tears and years of loneliness in late years. He also is survived by nephew Gary T. Durr, Clinton, TN, and nieces, Nancy Duncan, Batavia, NY and Sandra Carrier, Apalachin, NY.
He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Caribbean, the Pacific and in North China. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He was a life member of the First and Sixth Marine Division Associations and the China Marine Association. He also was a member of American Legion Post 401 and Elks Lodge 1039, Owego, NY.
He retired from IBM after 33 years of service and he and Jane moved from Endicott, NY to Oak Island, NC, where he resided for 20 years before moving to New Bern, NC. A former resident of Johnson City, NY and Endicott, NY, he served as Town of Union Councilman and in many other organizations. At Oak Island he served as Long Beach Councilman, as an EMT with the Long Beach Rescue Squad, and was a police officer at Long Beach and Yaupon Beach for several years. He earned his Coast Guard Captains and Masters license and operated his charter fishing boat named "My Other Woman" for a number of years. He also served as Vice-Chairman of the Brunswick Co. Utilities Operation Board.
At his request, there will be no memorial service, but please donate to your favorite charity in his name.
Burial will be at Floral Park Cemetery, Johnson City, NY next to his beloved wife, Jane, at a time to be determined by his family.
