He is survived by his son, Douglas Eugene Mehne, his wife Cara of Winchester, MA.; daughter, Elizabeth Anne Connell, her husband Patrick of New Bern; and their grandchildren; Cory Connell, Leah Connell, Kathleen Mehne, Caroline Mehne, Lilian Mehne. Doug was born in Valhalla NY on May 28, 1932. He attended the Valhalla Schools and White Plains High School graduating in 1950. He went on to graduate from State University of NY (SUNY) at Plattsburgh in 1954 with a B.S. Degree in Education. While at SUNY he was a member of the varsity soccer, baseball and basketball teams. He was also the President of the Student Athletic Board from 1952-1953. He later went on to get is M.S. of School Administration from the University of Rhode Island in 1973. Doug married Nancy Arnold Mehne (recently deceased) of White Plains July 6, 1957. Doug and Nancy fell in love during their junior year of high school in White Plains, NY. They were very happily married and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last summer. On their way to their honeymoon in Maine, they stopped in Westerly RI and upon seeing the beautiful ocean view, decided to honeymoon right in Westerly. A few years later in 1970, they moved to Westerly and raised their family. Doug served as Principal at Dunn’s Corners Elementary School from 1970-1981 and was Director of Elementary Education in the Town of Westerly from 1981-1987. Doug greatly enjoyed the time spent leading and educating children and also was the Scout Master of Troop 2-B.S.A. Dunn’s Corners, coached Little League baseball and organized and managed full-year after school sports programs at Dunn’s Corner School. Doug loved interacting with his students and could regularly be seen playing kickball at recess. Lucky to enjoy an early retirement, Doug and Nancy moved to Sea Trails in Sunset Beach, NC in 1989 where they enjoyed many years making new friends, golfing, bowling, playing cards and enjoying time near the ocean. They enjoyed their annual adventures to Block Island visiting Doug and his family and were always looking for their next project – building a bird house, garden, horse shoe pit, pruning and painting. A cocktail on the deck watching the sunset was the perfect end to each day. In 2005, Doug and Nancy moved to New Bern NC to be closer to Lisa and her family. They were amazing grandparents and involved in supporting each of Cory and Leah’s milestones and accomplishments. Doug lived his life with enthusiasm, passion, commitment, and dedication to his family. Doug along with Nancy enjoyed their many trips, bowling, bridge and golfing with their friends during their years in Westerly, RI, Block Island RI, Sunset Beach, NC and most recently New Bern NC. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 22nd at Christ Church in Westerly, RI at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, we ask friends and family to consider donating to The Nature Conservancy Block Island, (PO Box 1287 Block Island Rhode Island, 02807) in Nancy and Doug Mehne’s memory. It was with such sadness that I read about your dad’s passing - and yet with a smile reading his obituary, remembering the man with that infectious laugh! I had the pleasure of having “Mr. Mehne” as my principal when I was a young teacher. After a lengthy leave of absence to stay home to be a full time mom, your dad was instrumental in hiring me back to continue teaching in Westerly twelve years later. I have always thought of, and spoken of him, fondly. My deepest sympathy to your family.
