

Earl Asher Applegate of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away on April 13, 2023 at the age of 78. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 55 years, Melanie Applegate, and a loving father and grandfather to his two children, Joffa and Shem Applegate, and his seven grandchildren and great-grandchild.
Earl was born in Lakewood, New Jersey, on July 1, 1944. Earl served as a Marine, and it was during his military service that Earl met his wife Melanie in South Carolina. His time stationed in Japan inspired him to become an architect, and upon his return he went to architecture school at Arizona State University, graduating in 1973. His first professional employment was with King + King Architects in Syracuse, New York. In the spring of 1977, Earl moved to New Bern, North Carolina with his family where he pursued his passion for architecture. He eventually founded his own architecture firm, Applegate Architects.
Earl was a man of many interests and hobbies. He loved sailing and photography, and was a talented cook. He had a keen eye for the beauty of the world around him. Earl was also an avid reader with a deep appreciation for literature, often quoting his favorite authors in conversation.
Earl will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence, and unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication to his craft, as well as a lifetime of cherished memories with those who loved him. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and all who knew him.
