Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eric Lockhart. Together they built a life centered on service, faith, and family.
She is survived by her children: Linda Pennington; Jeff Lockhart and his wife Rebecca; and Cindy Mooney and her husband Rob. Eleanor was a devoted grandmother to Michael, Janell, David, Danny, Caroline, John, and Lauren, and a cherished great-grandmother to Charlie, Summit, Emerson, Jack, Roman, Eleanor, Elizabeth, August, Asher, and Peter.
Eleanor dedicated her professional life to caring for others as a Registered Nurse. She embraced her outdoor and leadership skills by volunteering for years as a Girl Scout leader. Even in retirement, her commitment to service never wavered. She volunteered as a first responder with the Rhems Fire Department and served faithfully as a Stephen Minister, offering compassion, guidance, and comfort to those in need.
A devoted woman of faith, Eleanor was a longtime member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, where she found community, purpose, and joy in serving others.
Eleanor and her husband Eric made their home in New Bern, North Carolina, where they developed an active and engaged life. They were members of the Blackbeard Sailing Club, enjoying time on the water and the friendships they formed there. Eleanor was also a devoted member of the YMCA, where she loved participating in classes and staying active well into her later years.
Eleanor will be remembered for her quiet strength, generous spirit, deep faith, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched—both professionally and personally—and through the generations of family who carry her example forward.
A service celebrating Eleanor’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness and service in her memory.
