

Fay Alma Coutts Blettner passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2016 surrounded by her family in New Bern, NC. Fay was born in Pittsburgh, PA on February 20, 1930. She was united in marriage to P.H. “Bull” Blettner on September 18, 1950 in Pittsburgh, PA. He preceded her in death April 22, 1983.
Fay was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a loving woman who was kind beyond belief. Fay grew up in Pittsburgh, the daughter of William and Alma Coutts. Her father, William, was a survivor of the Titanic at the age of 9, traveling with his mother and brother when the ship sank in 1912. Fay and her sister, Barbara Kharouf, enjoyed sharing the story of their father’s journey with the release of the popular movie in 1997.
Early in her marriage, Fay moved to Germany with her husband in the 1950’s while he was serving in the military. They traveled throughout Europe and immersed themselves in the culture and language of Germany before making North Carolina their permanent home, from Elizabeth City to Wilkesboro to New Bern.
Fay’s life was all about family. She was a generous and thoughtful person who was always concerned about the welfare of others. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Alma Coutts, her husband P.H. “Bull” Blettner, her son Eric Blettner, and her grandson Zachary Blettner.
Fay is survived by her daughters Pam Stepps, Valerie Blettner (Tim Werrell), and Kim Lavallee (Rob Lavallee); her grandchildren Doug Blackman (Laurie Koehler) and Adam Blettner; and her great-granddaughter Reese Blackman; her sister Barbara Kharouf (Chris Kharouf); niece Leslie Heilman (Michael Heilman) and nephew Kurt Kharouf; and grandniece Elisabeta Heilman.
Fay will be interred next to her husband at the New Bern National Cemetery at 1711 National Avenue on Friday, November 18 at 11:00am. Friends are welcome to attend the service at the National Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at their home on November 18th at 12:30pm.
