Grover Lanis Whitford, 79, of New Bern, passed away April 22, 2013 at Duke University Hospital.

Mr. Whitford was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He served our country in the U.S. Army in Germany and he was employed for 25 years with Wonder Bread. After his retirement, he worked at NADEP as a production controller and retired from there in 1989. Afterwards, he worked as a trade driver for various car dealerships in New Bern. He was a master mason of Doric Lodge and Sudan Shriner and he was an Emeritus member of the Sudan Mini Cars.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth McLawhorn Whitford, one son, Gregory Whitford of New Bern; one daughter, Lenise Kilborn of Oriental; his grandchildren, Amber Alvarado of Sandy Ridge; Joshua Bonner of Oriental; one great-grandchild, Emelia Alvarado of Sandy Ridge; and his brothers and sisters, Johnny Whitford and Roy Whitford, both of New Bern; Bobby Whitford of Ernul; and Linwood Whitford of Florida; Shirley Stilley of Corpus Christi, TX; Eva Lewis of Beaufort, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Cotten Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the funeral home. Burial with masonic rites will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park.

Uncle Lanis will be truly missed by so many lives he touched. I have so many good memories from childhood and right up to the last hand squeeze and wave goodbye. His humor, love for family and giving spirit are a great legacy for a wonderful man. He will be in our hearts always.
