Jim was born on October 18, 1936, in Grand Rapids, Michigan and grew up in Kalamazoo. Throughout his life, Jim was known for his generosity, integrity, and unwavering commitment to serving others. He believed in giving back to every community he called home.
Jim proudly served for more than 25 years as a police officer and detective in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he and his wife, Dean, raised their family. Following his retirement from law enforcement, Jim and Dean moved to New Bern, North Carolina, where he was able to spend more time pursuing one of his greatest passions—sailing. Even in retirement, Jim's dedication to helping others continued as he served another 25 years as a First Responder in New Bern.
An accomplished marksman, Jim competed and placed well on the police pistol team. In retirement, he still remained an active marksman working at a local range as a range and safety officer. He shared this passion with many friends and co-workers.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Vernadean "Dean" Stevens; his sons and daughters-in-laws, Rick and Debbie Stevens, Kevin and Tori Stevens, and Gary Stevens and Debbie Young; and his cherished grandchildren, Merlin Stevens, Natasha Stevens, Sierra Stevens, and Elizabeth Stevens. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Jim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and those who lives he touched throughout his years of service.
In memory of Jim, donations may be made to the Rhem Volunteer Fire Department at P.O. Box 13010, New Bern, NC 28561.
