Jane Carol Atkinson

Jane Crofton Atkinson, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 5, 2022, while at her residence in New Bern, NC The only child of the late Lester and Selma Crofton of Plymouth NC, Jane was born on January 21, 1936. Jane was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as a cherished friend to many in her community and church family. Simply put Jane, was a Teacher and Educator. She obtained her Master’s Degree in English from East Carolina University and after which she spent the next 40 plus years teaching at the High School and Collegiate Levels. Jane also was elected to and served on the Craven County Board of Education for many years. If you misused the English language around “Miss Jane” you would surely get an education in “proper” English. Teaching was her passion. Although Jane’s work passion was teaching she had an artistic flare. She was an accomplished water color artist and painted many pictures of Eastern North Carolina which decorated her home and were presented as gifts to those she loved. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She knitted over 1000 baby blankets for the young Military Families stationed at Cherry Point Naval Air Station. She was a “giver” of her art. Jane also served as a Stephen Minister at Christ Church in New Bern. She was also on the decorating team for all holiday events at the church for many years. Jane loved to travel and while enjoying retirement traveled the world to many countries, even walking on the Great Wall of China. Jane’s favorite place to “travel to” though was to the family cottage located on the Pamlico River. Jane spent all her summers at “the River” relaxing, reading and enjoying the peace which is found there in the wind and waves. The River will continue to be a place of peace for her family and friends. Jane is survived by her son Charles (Chuck) Lee Atkinson, III, daughter Jane Atkinson Peele, granddaughter Carlee Peele; grandson William Lee Atkinson, her sister-in-law Ruth Waters and brother-in-law Bill Atkinson; nieces RuthAnn Pinkman and husband John, Beth Foley and husband Mike, Cristi Moore and husband Joe, CeCe Smithwick and husband Rudy as well as many great nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends at Cotten Funeral Home, New Bern, NC on Tuesday 10 May from 4 to 6 pm. Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church in New Bern, NC on Wednesday 11 May at 10am.
