Jane was a member of Bethany Christian Church in Jasper. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Martin and her daughter, Pamela Martin Melton and granddaughter, April Elizabeth Martin and her parents Talmadge J. Wetherington and Bessie Wetherington.
She graduated from Jasper High School in 1948 and from Hardbarger Business College in 1952 and worked with the Civil Service at Cherry Point, NC as a Clerk-Typist until 1956 when she left her position to become a mother and homemaker.
She was a dedicated member of Jasper, Bethany Christian Church since joining in 1939 where she was a choir member and soloist since the age of 9 years old. For many years she sang at weddings and other special functions in the surrounding communities and Churches. She also served as the CWF President and Study Chairman at Bethany for many years and prepared the church bulletin for more than 15 years. She was the Church Historian for more than 15 years. She will be remembered for her compassion, her deep drive for learning and self-improvement, her strength and independence, her loyalty to God, Family, Friends and Neighbors. She bestows to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family and friends her deep impression of living life to the fullest, one day at a time, and living it for our LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST.
Her unconditional love and humble kindness touched the lives of all who knew her, especially those shut-ins in the community whom she visited regularly taking Sunday School literature and bulletins to help them still feel part of the Church and community. She had a reputation of being a good cook and sharing her baked goods with those whom she visited.
She was known for her candor and lived a life of faith and integrity, a life knit together by the love for Jesus and those whom she was acquainted. We can truly say, “Well done, good and faithful Friend.”
She is survived by two sons, Robert Johnson Martin and wife Donna, Timothy Caudill Martin and wife Libby; two daughters, Melanie Martin Phifer and Faith Martin Boyd and husband, James all of New Bern; one sister, Jessie Wiggins of New Bern; grandchildren, Justin Martin, Melissa Bass, Danny Phifer, Jr, Johnathan Martin, James Boyd, Jr, Ashley Boyd, Leo Melton, Justine Melton, Anna Martin Halstead, William Martin and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm Monday, April 7, 2014 at Cotten Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 2:00pm burial will follow at the Martin family cemetery.
