It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janet MacLaren, aged 81, on Thursday, February 15, 2024. Janet passed away peacefully in New Bern, surrounded by her loving children, Fiona and Andy, and daughter-in-law, Maryjo.
Born on May 25, 1942, in Stockton-on-Tees, England, to Joan and John Redfern, Janet's early life was marked by a deep appreciation for family and community. In 1964, she married her soulmate, Ian MacLaren, at St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Egglescliffe, England. Their partnership was a testament to love, adventure, and shared dreams.
In 1979, Janet and Ian embarked on a new chapter by moving to the United States, eventually making their home in southwest Pennsylvania with their children. Their retirement years were joyously spent in Fairfield Harbor, New Bern, from 2007 onwards. Janet embraced retirement with the spirit of an explorer, traveling to over 20 countries across six continents, immersing herself in the cultures, histories, and cuisines of the world.
Janet’s passion for life extended to her community in New Bern, where she was an active member of the choir at Christ Church. Her hobbies included computer games, which brought her great joy and amusement. Above all, Janet was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose love and pride for her family knew no bounds.
Janet leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her children, Fiona Adamsky and Andrew MacLaren, daughter-in-law Maryjo, grandchildren Samantha and husband Zach Hypes, Rozwell MacLaren, Abigail Kirchhofer, Julia MacLaren, Aaron Kirchhofer, and great-grandchildren Leo and Odin Hypes.
A service to celebrate Janet’s remarkable life will be held at Christ Church, New Bern, NC, on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 1pm. We invite friends and family to join us in honoring her memory and the incredible impact she had on all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Sound and Space, a fund established to acquire a new church organ which was close to Janet’s heart. Janet’s spirit of adventure, love for her family, and kindness to all will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Janet MacLaren.
