Jean was born on March 6, 1926 in Neenah, Wisconsin to Herb and Alice Heilig. After her sophomore year in high school in Appleton, Wisconsin, she moved to Richmond, Virginia where she graduated from high school. She attended Iowa State University briefly and then Colorado A&M University in Fort Collins, Colorado where she met and married Keith L. Boulier.
They moved to a succession of small towns in Nebraska where her husband practiced veterinary medicine before eventually settling in North Carolina. She raised one son and two daughters. Until a vision impairment forced her retirement in her 50's, she held a variety of jobs - kindergarten teacher, medical technician, physical therapist, and soils chemist at both the N.C. Department of Agriculture and the N.C. State Highway Department. She was an avid bridge player and bowler and took up golf in her 70s. She was a wonderful pianist with a wide repertoire of popular and show tunes. She enjoyed performing in the retirement communities in which she lived. Following the death of her husband, she settled in Garden City, South Carolina before eventually returning to North Carolina.
Jean is survived by her children Bryan Boulier (Anne) of Vienna, Virginia; Cary Batts (David) of New Bern, North Carolina; and Renee’ Karlsen (Patty) of Hillsborough, NC; six grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.
