John Albert Christie, Sr., 68, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. While surrounded by his loving family, John went home to be with the Lord, after a short, courageous battle with Leukemia. John was born December 10, 1944 in Passaic, NJ to John and Dorothy Christie. An only child, John spent his school day afternoons hanging around the East Rutherford fire station, until his mother would call for him to come home for supper. After graduating high school, John joined the United States Coast Guard where he proudly and honorably served for more than 20 years, retiring in 1984 as a Chief Radioman. After moving to New Bern in 1989, John soon began work at CarolinaEast Medical Center as a Communications Officer, retiring in 2007. A man of faith, John always put God and family first and himself second. He was a very good and selfless man. He loved trains, all things fire department and the United States Coast Guard.

John is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Hessler Christie in 1993, his father, John Roosevelt Christie in 1997. John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gwendolyn Elizabeth Dick Christie of New Bern, his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Kevin Quinn of Cove City, his daughter Melissa Belote of New Bern, his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Edward Weigl of New Bern, his son and daughter-in-law, John and Angela Christie, Jr., of Slidell, LA and his son, Andrew Christie of New Bern. He is also survived by his very precious grandchildren, whom he loved and adored dearly, Victoria Christie, Payton Ellis, Perry Belote, Skylar Christie, Asher Christie, Madison Quinn and James Whitley.

Gwendolyn and family;
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 40, New Bern, NC wanted to let you know we share the loss of your Husband, Father, Father In Law and Grandfather. Each Veteran we lose we want to pay tribute to and thank them for their service in the U. S. Coast Guard. We also want to thank the family that was behind the servicemen, you served right along with them.
The longer we live the more we learn, yet all our experience doesn't really seem to help when it comes to the loss of someone we care about.
