John "Jake" Radcliffe Jacobson

John (Jake) Radcliffe Jacobson, 86, of New Bern NC passed away on Thursday September 21, 2023. He was born on July 17, 1937 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin to the late George Clyde Jacobson and Marjorie Quackenbush Jacobson.

John was a professor of philosophy at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania for 28 years. He was a graduate of St. John's College and Princeton Theological Seminary. A lifelong entrepreneur, he engaged in many endeavors including sustainable agriculture, wine making, and boat building. An enthusiastic outdoorsman, in retirement John opened Evening Breeze Outfitters in New Bern NC. He was an avid reader and life-long learner, and an all-around “do it yourselfer”. He enjoyed singing, sailing, tennis, golf, gardening and kayaking.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Bethanne Thumm Jacobson, a sister Barbara Scott, a daughter Soren Breanna Sonson, two step-sons Trevor James Holliday and Benjamin Tyler Holliday, and numerous grandchildren and nieces. He is predeceased by his son Mark Randolph Jacobson.

A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern on October 4, 2023 at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Retinafoundation.org. or the Retina Foundation of the Southwest, P. O. Box 824189, Dallas Texas 75382-4189 or to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern at UUFNB.org or 508 Meadows Street, New Bern, NC 28560.
