John was born and raised in Robeson County, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his military service, John began his career in plywood production in Vander, North Carolina. He moved to New Bern on January 1, 1950, and worked as a plant supervisor of Horner Veneer, Laminated Wood, and Ladd Furniture for over 40 years. After his retirement, he worked as a door greeter at the New Bern Walmart for 16 years, retiring at age 90.
John was a member of Rhems Methodist Church and served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was devoted to his church and lived an active role in the care of the church and the church family.
John enjoyed pier fishing, mowing his grass, listening to country gospel music, and as “Deep Gully” talking with his many CB radio buddies.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Abner and Lela McLean; siblings, Robert, Margaret, and Donavan McLean; son-in-law, Carl Eddie Scott, Jr.; and grandson, John Taylor Scott.
John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Peggy; daughters, Anita Scott, Cathy McLean (Tim), and Dolores McLean; grandchildren, Trent Scott (Pam), Sarah Howard (Franky), Stella McLean (Daniel), and Daniel Smith; great-grandchildren, Connor Howard, Anna Howard, Claire Scott, and Nevaeh Howard; and a niece, Patricia McLean (Dennis).
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 6, 2024 at Rhems Methodist Church, 5880 Highway 17 S, New Bern, NC. A reception will immediately follow in the fellowship building. There will be a private family burial at Friendship Baptist Church, Trenton, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Rhems Methodist Church: Jody White, 738 Simmons Loop Road, New Bern, NC 28562.
The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice for the loving care and support given to our husband, father, and grandpa with a special thanks to Dr. John Burnett, Cathy W., Cathy H., Jasmine, LaVerne, Tony, Ashley, and Pastor Gary. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Dr. John Hall.
