

Born on May 26, 1941, in Pitt County near Farmville, North Carolina, John was the son of the late Charley Albert and Mary Louise Worthington. After graduating from Farmville High School, he began a 36-year career at DuPont in Kinston, advancing from a line worker to roles in training and management through dedication and hard work.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Grace Worthington; his son, Michael Curtis Worthington and wife Dawn of Cary, NC; and three beloved grandchildren who brought him endless joy - Ashlyn Worthington Kendall and her husband Jacob Kendall, Camille Grace Worthington, and Aidan Michael Worthington. He is also survived by his brother, Ted Worthington and wife Mary of Kinston, and his sister, Ann Elmore of Dunn, NC.
Known for his wonderful wit and great spirit, John was a man who loved life and brought joy to those around him. His love of sports began early and continued throughout his life. As an adult and father, he coached Little League baseball, including the special opportunity of coaching his son Michael. He was a passionate college basketball fan who loved NC State and later developed an affinity for Duke. He was also an avid golfer who enjoyed many years on the course.
His greatest passion was his faith and his church family. A longtime active member of Trenton Missionary Baptist Church, he served faithfully as a deacon, Sunday School director, youth teacher, and with the Baptist Men. John had a special gift for connecting with young people and poured his heart into mentoring and teaching them.
He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, steady presence, quiet service to others, and the deep love he showed for his family, church, and community.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Trenton Missionary Baptist Church, 206 W. Jones Street, Trenton, NC. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM, graveside service, and a reception afterward in the church fellowship hall.
