

He was born on September 17th, 1934 in Tientsin China to Brig. Gen. William Elgie Carraway and Mela Royall Carraway.
He is survived by his daughter Margreth Caroline Carraway-Rauch and son Stuart Royall Carraway and four grandchildren, Johanna, Anne-Sophie, Frederick and Cornelius all of whom reside in Germany, and his brother John Carraway of California.
During his childhood he lived in Panama, Vienna Austria and many cities in the United States living years at a time with his Aunts Rose Brooke Carraway and Gertrude Sprague Carraway in New Bern. Therefore New Bern N.C. was his home.
He graduated from Episcopal High School, Va., and was admitted to the United States Military Academy, West Point N.Y. from which he graduated in 1956. After having served in Vietnam he received his masters degree in English from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Thereafter he taught at the United States Military Academy in West Point and served various tours in Europe and the Middle East. After retirement in 1977, he was a teacher at Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville S.C. and at Greenville Technical College.
He had a passion for music, literature and history. He shared his love and unusually profound knowledge of the history of the Civil War in many ways, such as teaching and giving speeches.
He found his calling and fulfillment in teaching. He was very respected and loved as a teacher not only because of his broad and extraordinary knowledge combined with his sense of humor, but also for his conviction that communication is love.
The funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, New Bern N.C. on Saturday August 17th, 2013 at 2:00 PM. The Carraway Family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Endowment, New Bern, N.C.
