I met Joe shortly after I retired in 2005 and decided to venture into the woodworking hobby. We met through the North Carolina Wood workers website. We seemed to click as good friends with similar interests and both of us with  four daughters, there always seemed to be things to discuss regarding parenting four daughters. Joe had a fabulous sense of humour in jokes about Canadians. (Me being from  Canada made it funnier.) Joe was a fabulous woodworking mentor to me and very generous with his time and sharing his ideas and skills.

After Joe relocated to New Burn we sort of lost touch with the exception of him dropping his jokes to me electronically. ( EMail)

I was so sorry to hear of his passing last week. Kathy (my wife) and I send our condolences to Dianne and their family during this sad time.

RIP My friend. You will be missed.

Joe was a great woodworker and, more important, a great friend. Always willing to help a friend in need, Joe was always there to assist.
His wit and sense of humor brightened our lives. I hope he knows how much he will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to Diane and all of his family.

Joe and I became good friends when we both worked for IBM Corp. in Norfolk, Virginia in the 1960's and 1970's.  Somehow we always ended up living in the same areas of the country and were able to keep in touch and visit throughout our lives.   He was a friend when I needed a friend, he made me laugh when I needed someone to make me laugh, and he even gave me woodworking advice when I needed advice.  As fate would have it, after not seeing Joe for probably 8 or 9 years, we had lunch together just a day before he passed away.  We chatted about old times and he told me about his children's accomplishments in life and how proud he was of them.   He told me about his RV and how he planned to take his wife, Diane, on trips to see the country while they were still able to travel.  He was a unique individual and just as in "Ask not for whom the bell tolls" I feel that my life is a little bit diminished because of the death of Joe Scharle.  I will miss him.
